Forts and monuments visible across the district are evidence of the historical significance the place holds. Kings, sultans, chieftains, Kasargod has seen them all, with each having left a mark visible even today. Bekal fort is the most popular historical site in the district. Historians state that the fort dates back to the time of the Chirakkal Rajas and was built as a defence for the surrounding royal palaces.
