As a land of many cultures, Kasaragod has a number of spiritual centres to showcase. The revered 400-year-old Hindu monastic centre Edneer Mutt is one among them. Though the place is known as a tourist destination, it is a famous institution for art, culture, literature and learning.
In the plains, by the banks of Madhuvahini River, stands the knowledge centre in all its grandeur. Previously known as Sri Shankaracharya Totakacharya Mahasamsthanam, Edneer Mutt belongs to the line of Totakacharya, one of the first four disciples of Sri Shankaracharya. The mutt attracts visitors from Kerala and its neighbouring states. This centre is suitable for spiritual studies. It conducts dialogues and discussions on religious and spiritual matters frequently. The main deities of this centre are Dhakshinamurti and Gopalakrishna. The guardian deity of the centre, Daiva Kuntipala Chamundi is worshipped at a temple nearby.
The centre follows the Smartha Bhagavatha tradition and the Advaita Vedanta school of Indian philosophy. The head or pontiff of Edaneer Mutt is generally known as Edaneeru Swamiji. The simplicity and serenity add to its spiritual ambience.
